A Speakeasy Sign With Your Name On It

The arched line across the top is yours. ROCKEFELLER in the sample art is our example, not part of the design. Send your family name, or the name the bar already goes by, typed exactly the way you want it printed, apostrophe and all, because we set what you send.

The year is yours as well. EST. 2024 in the sample is just that, a sample. Most people use the year the bar was finished, which is rarely the year the house was built and is usually the better story. PASSWORD REQUIRED stays, because a speakeasy without a password is just a bar.

What It Looks Like

SPEAKEASY runs the full width in ornate gold Victorian capitals with Cocktail Lounge flowing through beneath it in a long tailed script. PASSWORD REQUIRED sits along the bottom rail between flourishes, a gold martini glass stands in each lower corner, EST. anchors the left corner with your year matching it on the right, and a crown of Victorian filigree arches over your name at the top. The whole sign is die cut to that arched shape, so the curve is the actual edge of the sign, not a border printed on a rectangle.

It is digitally designed in the old prohibition era signwriting style, gold on deep black. The gilded, carved look is in the artwork. The sign itself is acrylic or aluminum, not wood, and we would rather say that plainly than have it arrive and surprise you.

Prohibition Style Decor for a Home Bar, Basement or Man Cave

At roughly 1.74 to 1 this sign is squarer than most of our bar signs, which run long and low. That shape is built for the wall behind a back bar, the brick above a basement stair, or the widest wall of a man cave, where it reads as the centerpiece of the room rather than a strip above it. It carries speakeasy decor on its own, no shelf of props required.

It works as a gift for the same reason it works as decor. If somebody has spent two years calling the basement the lounge, putting their name over SPEAKEASY in gold and hanging it behind the bottles is the version of the joke that lasts.

Acrylic or Aluminum, and What That Changes

Acrylic is the indoor showpiece. It is high gloss, so the gold picks up every light in the room, and it ships with standoff hardware for a floating mount that lifts the arch off the wall. Acrylic is indoors only.

Aluminum is 3mm, 1/8 inch, aluminum composite, rigid and weatherproof, so it is the one for a covered patio bar, a pool bar, a pole barn or a garage. It shrugs off heat, cold and humidity, and salty sea air is not a problem, so a beach house bar is fair game too.

Questions About This Speakeasy Sign

What can I personalize?

Two things. The name in the arch across the top and the established year in the corner scroll. ROCKEFELLER and 2024 are our samples. SPEAKEASY, Cocktail Lounge and PASSWORD REQUIRED are the fixed artwork and stay as they are.

Is the lettering actually raised, engraved or gilded?

No. Our signs are made of aluminum. There is no embossing, raised lettering, or engraved lettering on our signs. They are graphically printed to look as if they have those effects. The same is true of the acrylic version. The shading and the gold leaf effect live in the artwork, and from the few feet away anyone actually looks at a sign, it reads as carved.

Is the arch really cut, or printed on a rectangle?

Really cut. The sign is die cut to the arched silhouette, so the top curve and the stepped shoulders are the physical edge of the panel. No black rectangle behind it, no fake border.

Can it go outside?

The aluminum can, under cover. A covered patio bar, a porch bar or a pole barn are all fine, and salty sea air is not a problem. Acrylic is an indoor material.

Which material should I choose?

Acrylic for a finished basement lounge or a dining room bar where you want gloss and a floating mount. Aluminum for anywhere that gets cold, damp or sunny, or whenever you want the most durable version of the sign. If it is a heated room and you are torn, acrylic is the one people are happier with.

What size should I order?

Measure the wall and aim for roughly two thirds of its width. Because this sign is squarer than a typical bar sign, check the height too, especially over a bar back or shelving. Cut the size out of painters tape and stick it on the wall first. It costs nothing and it settles the argument.

Is this a neon sign, or does it light up?

No, and we do not make neon. This is a printed sign. If you want a glow, an LED strip mounted behind the aluminum version throws a soft halo onto the wall around the arch. Lighting is not included with either material.

Do I see it before it prints?

Yes. Personalized orders get a proof to approve first. Nothing goes to print until you have read your own name and your own year and told us it is right.
