A Billiards Sign With Your Name On It

The line across the top is the family name, or the name the room already goes by. THE HAVERSONS in the photographs is our example, not part of the design. Type yours exactly the way you want it printed, apostrophe and all, because we set what you send.

The year is yours as well. Most people use the year the table went in, which is rarely the year the house was built and is usually the better story. The line across the bottom reads GOOD FRIENDS. GREAT SHOTS. BETTER MEMORIES. unless you write your own, and plenty of people do. A house rule. A standing bet. Whatever gets said in that room often enough to be worth painting on the wall.

What It Looks Like

Tall Victorian capitals in warm antique gold, with BILLIARDS set across the full width and Lounge running through it in a long tailed script. A fine gold keyline frames the whole plaque, a pair of scroll flourishes flank the name along the top, EST sits to the left of the script and the year to the right in matching scrolls, and the ground is a deep black slate texture rather than a flat black, so it reads with some age to it.

It is digitally designed in the old billiard hall signwriting style. The carved and gilded look is in the artwork. The sign itself is canvas, aluminum or acrylic, and we would rather say that plainly than have it arrive and surprise you.

Billiard Room Decor for a Man Cave, Basement Bar or Game Room

The shape is built for the wall a pool table sits against. It is long and low, so it spans the table rather than fighting the cue rack or the bottle shelf beside it. Over the table, behind the bar back, at the foot of the basement stairs or above a bank of cues are all places it sits properly.

It works as a gift for the same reason it works as decor. If somebody has spent two years calling the basement the lounge, putting that name in gold leaf lettering and hanging it over the table is the version of the joke that lasts.

Canvas, Aluminum or Acrylic, and What That Changes

Stretched canvas is the warmest of the three and the quietest on the wall. A 1.5 inch gallery wrap on a wooden frame, wired and ready to hang, with felt pads on the back. Indoors only, and it cannot be backlit, because light will not pass through canvas.

Aluminum is 3mm aluminum composite, rigid and weather tolerant, so it is the one for a pole barn, an unheated garage or a covered patio bar. An LED strip run behind an aluminum panel throws a halo of light onto the wall around it, which is the glow you see in several of the photographs. The light goes around the sign rather than through it.

Acrylic is the one to pick if you want the plaque itself to light. The edge is clear and engineered to take an LED strip, so the light travels into the acrylic and the whole sign lifts off the wall. It is high gloss, so the gold picks up the room even unlit, and it ships with standoff hardware for a floating mount. Acrylic is indoors only.

Questions About This Billiards Sign

What can I personalize?

Three things. The family name across the top, the established year, and the line across the bottom. THE HAVERSONS, 2023 and GOOD FRIENDS. GREAT SHOTS. BETTER MEMORIES. are our examples. Replace any or all of them. Leave the bottom line blank and it stays as it is.

Does it light up like the photographs?

Not on its own. No lighting is included with any version, and the glow in the photographs comes from an LED strip the owner adds. The acrylic lights from its clear edge, so the plaque itself glows. Aluminum is solid, so a strip behind it throws a halo onto the wall around the sign instead. Canvas cannot be lit at all. Our free guide walks through fitting a strip either way.

Is this a neon sign?

No, and we do not make neon. This is a printed sign. Lit from an LED strip it gives a soft even glow rather than the bright tube look of neon. If neon is what you want, we are the wrong shop and we would rather say so now.

Is the lettering actually raised or gilded?

No. Our signs are made of aluminum. There is no embossing, raised lettering, or engraved lettering on our signs. They are graphically printed to look as if they have those effects. The bevel, the shadow and the gold leaf effect are in the artwork, and from the few feet away anyone actually looks at it, it reads as carved.

Which material should I choose?

Canvas for a finished basement lounge where you want warmth and no shine. Acrylic if you want it lit or you want gloss. Aluminum if the room is a pole barn, a garage or anywhere that gets cold or damp. If it is a heated basement with a bar in it and you are torn, acrylic is the one people are happier with.

What size should I order?

Measure the wall and aim for roughly two thirds of its width, or match the sign to the length of the table. A standard eight foot table usually takes the 48 by 24 or the 55 by 28 above it. Cut the size out of painters tape and stick it on the wall first. It costs nothing and it settles the argument.

Can it go outside?

The aluminum can, under cover. A porch, a covered patio bar or a pole barn are all fine. Acrylic and canvas are indoor materials.

How is it hung?

Acrylic comes with standoff hardware for a floating mount, which also leaves the gap an LED strip needs. Canvas arrives wired with felt pads. Aluminum is ready to hang.

Do I see it before it prints?

Yes. Personalized orders get a proof to approve first. Nothing goes to print until you have read your own name, your year and your own line and told us it is right.
