Type it exactly the way you want it printed, apostrophe and all, and we set it in the arched header above the word ALIBI. TODD'S in the photographs is just our example. Most funny bar signs shout. This one is dry. It reads as a proper bar sign first and the punchline arrives a second later, which is why it works over a real bar instead of looking like a novelty.

What It Looks Like

Tall beveled capitals with a warm timber grain, set on a deep black plaque with a slate texture and a fine gold keyline running inside the border. A small flourish crowns the arch, the tagline sits under a thin divider, and four standoff heads at the corners finish it like something bolted up in a bar that has been there a while.

It is digitally designed in the old tavern signwriting style, warm and worn rather than clean and modern. The carved timber look is in the artwork. The sign itself is aluminum or acrylic, and we would rather tell you that up front than have you unwrap it expecting oak.

Funny Bar Signs for a Man Cave, Basement Bar or Garage

This is a man cave sign, a basement bar sign and a garage bar sign, and it suits all three for the same reason: the humor is for the people who already know you. It hangs over a bar top, behind a kegerator, at the bottom of the basement stairs, in a games room, or beside the door of a garage someone calls a workshop.

It is a gift that lands, and the two custom lines are what make it one. If you are buying for someone whose home bar already has a name, or who has been calling the basement a speakeasy for two years, put that name on the header and the running joke underneath. The horizontal shape sits well on the wall above bottles, where a tall sign would fight the shelving.

Aluminum or Acrylic, and What That Changes

Aluminum is the one to pick if the sign goes anywhere weather reaches, a covered patio, an outdoor bar, a pole barn or a garage that gets cold. It is 3mm aluminum composite, rigid, and it does not care about damp.

Acrylic is the one to pick if you want it lit. The edge is clear and engineered to accept an LED strip, so the whole sign glows from the perimeter the way the photographs show. It is high gloss, so the timber grain and the gold keyline pick up bar lighting even unlit, and it comes with standoff hardware for a floating mount. Acrylic is indoors only.

What can I personalize?

Two lines. The name in the arched header above ALIBI, and the saying underneath. Type the name exactly the way you want it printed, apostrophe included. Leave the second line blank and it stays as EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD ONE. TODD'S in the photographs is our example, not a fixed part of the design.

How long can the name be?

Up to 45 characters on each line, though short reads best. A single name or a two word bar name sits comfortably in the arch and gets set large. Something long is condensed to fit, which still looks right but gives up a little of the presence.

Is this real wood?

No. The lettering is designed to look like carved timber, and it is printed. The sign is 3mm aluminum composite or high gloss acrylic, your choice. We do not make wood signs, and we would rather be straight about it than have it turn up and surprise you.

Is the lettering actually raised?

No. Our signs are made of aluminum. There is no embossing, raised lettering, or engraved lettering on our signs. They are graphically printed to look as if they have those effects. The bevel and the shadow on the letters are in the artwork, and they read as carved on the wall from a few feet back, which is where anyone looks at it from.

Does it light up like the photos?

The acrylic can. Its edge is clear and built to take an LED strip, and that is what produces the glow around the plaque. The strip is not included, and our free guide walks through fitting one. The aluminum does not backlight. It is a solid panel, so light cannot pass through it.

Is this a neon sign?

No, and we do not make neon. This is a printed sign. The acrylic version lights from an LED strip along its edge, which gives a soft even glow rather than the bright tube look of neon. If neon is what you are after, we are the wrong shop and we would rather say so.

Should I choose aluminum or acrylic?

Pick aluminum if it goes outside under cover, in a garage, a pole barn or anywhere that gets cold or damp. Pick acrylic if it hangs indoors over a bar and you want it lit or you want the high gloss. If you are torn and it is going in a finished basement bar, acrylic is the one people are happier with.

What size should I order?

Measure the wall it hangs on and aim for roughly two thirds of that width in sign. Over a standard home bar back wall the 36 by 18 or the 42 by 21 is usually the right call. Cut the size out of painters tape and stick it up first. It costs nothing and it settles the argument.

Can it go outside?

The aluminum can, under cover. A porch, a covered patio bar, a pole barn or a garage are all fine. The acrylic is an indoor material. For a fully exposed wall we would still put the aluminum under an overhang rather than in open weather.

How is it hung?

Acrylic comes with standoff hardware for a floating mount that stands the sign off the wall a little, which is also what leaves room for an LED strip. Aluminum is ready to hang.
