What breed is the steer in this painting?

A Texas longhorn. You can tell by the horn spread and the brindled brown and white hide. It is the breed most people picture when they picture Texas, which is part of why this piece lands differently from the horse paintings in the same collection.

How is this different from the other cowboy Santa canvases?

Most of the others put him on horseback and moving. This one has him standing still with a longhorn, so it is the close, warm piece rather than the wide, traveling piece. If you want motion, look at the sunset ride or the packhorse. If you want something that settles a mantel, this is the one.

Should I choose the black frame or the white one?

Can I hang it above a working fireplace?

Yes, with a little sense. Keep it above the heat line and off a mantel that runs hot, because sustained heat and smoke are hard on any canvas. A mantel with enough depth to carry the heat up and away is fine.

Can it go on a porch or outdoors?
