This listing is the framed version. The printed canvas is set inside a solid wood frame with a narrow float between the canvas edge and the moulding, which gives the piece a finished border and a little more presence on the wall.

Black Frame Or White

Black is the stronger choice in most rooms. The stable interior in this artwork is already deep brown and near black, so a black frame reads as an extension of the scene rather than a border around it. Take black if the room has walnut, mahogany, reclaimed wood or brass, if it is going above a dining sideboard or a mantel, or if you want the piece to anchor the wall.

White keeps it light. It separates the dark stable from a pale wall instead of blending into it, which makes the shaft of light read brighter from across the room. Take white if the walls are cream or soft grey, if the furniture is light oak or painted, or if the room is already working in linen and greenery rather than dark wood.

Choosing Your Size

Measure the furniture or the wall space it will hang above and aim for roughly two thirds of that width in artwork. Above a sofa, a mantel or a dining sideboard that usually lands at 30x20 or 36x24 inches. For an entry, a hallway, a study or a bedside wall, 18x12 or 24x16 inches is the comfortable middle. The 12x8 suits a shelf lean, a stair gallery wall or the narrow stretch beside a door.

Remember that the size you pick is the canvas, not the outside of the frame, so the finished piece hangs a little larger than the number suggests. Hang it at eye level, centered 57 to 60 inches from the floor, and when it sits above furniture leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of that furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one group.

Is this a painting or a print?

It is a print. The artwork was digitally designed in a painterly style and then printed to order on canvas and framed in the size you choose, which is how we can offer it in five sizes and two frame colors rather than as one single piece. The brushwork you see is part of the image, not paint sitting on the surface.

Should we pick the black frame or the white one?

Black reads as an extension of the dark stable in the artwork and anchors a wall, which suits walnut, mahogany, reclaimed wood and brass. Can this hang on a porch, in a bathroom or anywhere damp?

No. Canvas and wood are both indoor materials. Steam, weather and direct afternoon sun will all shorten the life of the piece, so keep it on an interior wall away from a hot south facing window and out of a bathroom that gets steamy.
