Description

Patriotic Barn Quilt in Red, White and Blue

A classic eight point star barn quilt in red, white and navy, printed on 3mm aluminum composite rather than painted on wood. Eight square sizes from 12 by 12 inches up to 48 by 48 inches, weatherproof, rust free, and ready to go straight on the barn.

Barn quilts have been going up on American barns for generations, and traditionally they are plywood, hand painted, and repainted every few years when the weather gets to them. This one is not.

Metal, Not Wood, and Why That Matters

Most barn quilts you will find are painted plywood or MDF. They look wonderful for a season or two. Then the sun fades the reds, water finds the edge grain, the corners swell, and you are back up the ladder with a brush.

This one is printed on 3mm aluminum composite with fade resistant UV inks. It does not absorb water, it does not warp, and it never needs repainting. Put it on the south face of a barn and leave it there.

Our signs are made of aluminum. There is no embossing, raised lettering, or engraved lettering on our signs. They are graphically printed to look as if they have those effects. The crisp folded look of the star is in the artwork, which is exactly how a painted quilt block reads from the yard anyway.

The Pattern

An eight point star worked in navy, barn red and white, with a second star breaking out of the first in offset blocks so the whole square reads with depth rather than flat. The reds carry a subtle texture that keeps it from looking like printed vinyl, and the white is bright enough to hold its shape against both a dark barn and a white one.

It is a patriotic palette without a flag on it, which is why it works year round rather than just in July. Up on a gable it reads as Americana. Over a garage door it reads as farmhouse.

Where a Barn Quilt Goes

The gable end is the classic spot, centered under the peak where it can be seen from the road. That is what the larger sizes are for.

Beyond that: above a barn door, on a pole barn, over a garage, on a shed, along a fence line, or on the side of a workshop. Indoors it works too, on a tall entryway wall or above a staircase, where the square shape fills space a rectangular sign cannot.

If you are on a barn quilt trail, or thinking of starting one on your road, the metal versions hold their color far longer than the painted blocks beside them.

Choosing a Size

Size is the thing people get wrong, because a barn is bigger than it looks from the driveway.

On a full size barn gable, 36 by 36 inches is usually the smallest that reads from the road, and 48 by 48 inches is the one most people are actually picturing. On a garage, a shed or a pole barn, 24 by 24 or 30 by 30 sits right. Indoors, 12 by 12 through 20 by 20 behaves like wall art.

One of the photographs shows the 48 inch held between two people. That is the honest way to judge it.

Questions About This Barn Quilt

Is this real wood?

No, and that is the point. Traditional barn quilts are painted plywood. This is printed aluminum composite, so it holds its color and shape through weather that would have you repainting a wooden one.

Can it really stay outside?

Yes. Aluminum composite is an outdoor signage material. It does not rust, it does not absorb water, and the inks are UV resistant. A barn gable, a pole barn, a shed or a fence line are all what it is built for.

What size should I get?

For a full size barn gable, 36 by 36 is the practical minimum and 48 by 48 is what most people have in mind. Garage or shed, 24 by 24 or 30 by 30. Indoors, 12 by 12 up to 20 by 20. Cut the square out of painters tape and hold it up on the wall first.

How is it mounted?

It is a flat rigid panel, so it mounts the same way a painted barn quilt does. Most people screw it directly to the siding or to a simple wooden frame behind it. On a finished wall indoors, stand offs give it a floating look.

Will the colors fade?

They are printed with fade resistant UV inks rather than house paint, so they hold up far longer than a painted board. Nothing outdoors lasts forever, but you will not be touching this up every couple of seasons.

Can I get a different color combination?

This one is set in red, white and navy. We make barn quilts in other palettes, and if you want a specific combination to match your barn, start a custom order and we will design it.

Is it heavy?

No. Aluminum composite is a lightweight panel, which is one of the reasons it suits a gable. It is considerably lighter than the equivalent sheet of painted plywood.

NOTE: Measure your space carefully with a tape measure. We are not responsible for the wrong size ordered. Use our size guide here.

Patriotic Barn Quilt - Red, White and Blue Metal Barn Quilt Sign

What a Barn Quilt Is

A barn quilt is a single oversized quilt block mounted on the side of a barn. The tradition is American and fairly recent, usually traced to Ohio in 2001, when a daughter painted a quilt block on her mother's barn in memory of her grandmother. The idea travelled. There are now barn quilt trails running through most farming states, mapped routes that take you from one barn to the next.

The patterns themselves are far older. They are traditional quilting blocks, the same ones that were pieced by hand for generations. This one is an eight point star, one of the oldest and most recognizable blocks there is.

Most barn quilts are painted plywood. Yours does not have to be.

Why We Print Them on Aluminum

A painted plywood barn quilt is a lovely weekend project and a recurring chore. Plywood drinks water through its edge grain, the corners lift, and the reds are usually the first colors to go chalky in the sun. Two or three seasons on a south facing wall and it wants sanding and repainting.

We print on 3mm aluminum composite instead. It is the same material used for commercial outdoor signage. It will not absorb water, it will not warp, it does not rust, and the UV inks hold their color far longer than exterior house paint on wood. You hang it once.

It is also light. A 48 inch aluminum composite panel is considerably easier to get up a ladder than the equivalent sheet of painted plywood, which matters more than people expect when the mounting point is a gable.

Sizing It to the Building

The single most common mistake is going too small. A barn reads much larger from the road than it does from the driveway, and a quilt block that looks generous while it is leaning against the wall can disappear once it is forty feet up.

On a full size barn gable, 36 by 36 inches is about the smallest that still reads from the road, and 48 by 48 inches is what most people actually have in mind when they picture one. On a garage, a shed, a pole barn or a smaller outbuilding, 24 by 24 or 30 by 30 is proportionate. Indoors, 12 by 12 through 20 by 20 behaves like a piece of wall art rather than architecture.

The traditional rule of thumb among barn quilt trail makers is that the block should be roughly a third of the width of the wall it sits on. That is a good starting point, and it usually pushes people larger than their instinct.

Mounting It

It mounts the same way a painted barn quilt does, because it is the same shape and a good deal lighter. Most people fix it straight to the siding with exterior screws and washers, or build a simple wooden frame behind it and fix to that, which lets air move behind the panel and gives a little shadow line.

On board and batten, fix through the battens rather than the flat boards. On metal siding, use screws rated for the panel. If the wall is not flat, a light frame behind solves it.

Indoors on a finished wall, stand offs hold it slightly away from the plaster and make it read as art rather than signage.

The Red, White and Navy Palette

This is a patriotic palette with no flag in it, which is deliberate. A flag motif tends to come down after the fourth of July. A star block in red, white and navy stays up all year, reads as Americana in summer and as classic farmhouse in February.

The navy is deep enough to hold its shape against a white barn, and the white is bright enough to carry against a black or weathered one. The reds carry a fine texture in the print rather than sitting flat, which is what keeps it from looking like vinyl from close up.
