"It is a typical mid Michigan farm winter scene," is how Tammy describes it, and that is exactly the appeal. The red barn in the country is iconic and it never goes out of style. It reads farmhouse in any season and it reads Christmas the moment there is snow on it.

This is her own photograph, not a licensed stock image, which is worth knowing because most barn wall art on the market is the same handful of library shots sold by dozens of different stores. The colour is what carries it. Everything in the frame is white, grey and bare brown except the barn, so the eye lands there and stays.

Choosing Your Size

Measure the furniture or the wall space it will hang above and aim for roughly two thirds of that width in artwork. Above a sofa or a mantel that usually lands at 36x24 or 48x32 inches. For an entry, a hallway or a bedroom, 24x16 or 30x20 is the comfortable middle, and the 12x8 and 16x11 suit a shelf lean or a gallery wall.

Hang it at eye level, centered 57 to 60 inches from the floor, and when it sits above furniture leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of that furniture and the bottom of the canvas so the two read as one group.

How is this different from your other red barn pieces?

Same photograph, three different finishes. This is the stretched canvas one, which needs no frame and no glass. We also sell it as a framed print with four frame colours, and as a wide panoramic on canvas or metal. Pick the format that suits the wall, not a different picture.

Is this a photograph or a painting?

A photograph, taken by Tammy Prebble in mid Michigan. If you want the same subject painted rather than photographed, we also sell a painted mountain barn scene, which is a completely different look.

Does it need a frame?

No. The canvas is wrapped over a 1.5 inch deep wooden stretcher and arrives ready to hang, so it is a finished piece as it is. If you would rather have a frame, buy the framed print version instead.

Is it only for Christmas?

No. There is no tree, no lettering and nothing festive in the image, so it is a winter photograph that suits Christmas rather than a Christmas picture. Most customers leave it up through the whole winter.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes. Mounting hardware comes attached and felt pads are included to protect the wall, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to assemble.

Can this hang on a porch, in a bathroom or anywhere damp?

No. Canvas is an indoor material. Steam, weather and direct afternoon sun will all shorten its life, so keep it on an interior wall away from a hot south facing window. For a covered porch or an exposed wall, printed 3mm aluminum composite is the right product instead.
