The water underneath is deep teal and genuinely rough, caught mid swell with the crests breaking white. Behind it a vast cloud climbs the left of the frame, and the sky past it has gone pale gold. This is very early morning light rather than sunset.

Across the top, in a quiet hand lettered script, Be of good cheer; it is I; and beneath it in open capitals BE NOT AFRAID. with Matthew 14:27 underneath. The lettering sits in the clear part of the sky, so it reads from across a room without covering the water or the figure.

The Verse People Reach For

Matthew 14:27 is what Jesus says to the disciples in the middle of the night, in a boat, in a storm, when they are certain they are looking at a ghost. Be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid.

That is why this artwork keeps the water rough. The sea is not calm, the boat is not close, and the light is only just arriving. The reassurance lands in the middle of the storm rather than after it, which is where the verse actually sits. It is the piece people hang when the thing they are walking through has not finished yet.

Where It Goes

Over a mantel, above a sofa or a console in an entry, in a hallway, a study, a bedroom or a stair landing. The palette is soft blue grey, deep teal and warm gold, so it sits comfortably with white shiplap, oak, rattan and linen, and it holds its own above a stone fireplace. It also suits a church office, a fellowship hall, a counseling room or a chaplaincy.

Black Frame or White

Black is the stronger choice in most rooms. It picks up the dark water and gives the pale sky a hard edge to sit against, which suits oak, warm wood and a white or greige wall.

White keeps it soft and gallery like. It lets the cloud and the gold light carry the piece, and it suits a pale limestone mantel, a room already working in creams, or a gallery wall where several white frames hang together. Both are solid wood and both ship ready to hang.

What Arrives

✔ Framed canvas print, finished in a solid wood frame in your choice of black or white

✔ Five sizes from 12x8 up to 36x24 inches

✔ Sizes refer to the canvas inside the frame, so the outside measurement runs a little larger

✔ Semi gloss print for added depth and color

✔ Printed with fade resistant inks that are water based and solvent free

✔ Mounting hardware attached, so it hangs straight out of the packaging

✔ Leveling bumpers included to protect the wall

✔ Designed in Michigan, made to order in North America

✔ Free shipping to the USA and Canada

Honest About What This Is

This is a printed reproduction on canvas, not an original painting. The artwork was digitally designed in a painterly style and then printed to order in the size you choose, which is how it can be offered in five sizes and two frame colors rather than as a single piece. The brushwork you see is part of the image.

The canvas is stretched over a wood frame and finished in a solid wood floater frame. Sizes refer to the canvas inside the frame, so the finished piece measures a little larger than the size you pick.

Questions About This Christian Canvas

What verse is on this piece?

Matthew 14:27. Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. It is lettered across the sky at the top of the artwork with the reference beneath it.

Is this an original painting?

No. It is a printed canvas reproduction, made to order in the size you choose. We print it with fade resistant inks and finish it in a solid wood frame, so what arrives is ready to hang rather than ready to frame.

Should I choose the black frame or the white one?

Black picks up the dark water and gives the pale sky an edge to sit against, which suits oak, warm wood and a greige wall. White lets the cloud and the gold light carry the piece and suits a pale mantel or a room working in creams. Both are solid wood and both ship ready to hang.

Would this suit a church, an office or a counseling room?

Yes. The verse reads from a distance, the palette is calm rather than loud, and there is nothing in the scene tied to a denomination. We print the larger sizes for exactly these rooms.

Is this a Christmas piece?

No. This one is evergreen. There is no snow, no tree and nothing seasonal in the scene, so it stays up all year.

Can I hang it on a porch or outdoors?

No. Canvas is an indoor material and weather will ruin it. For a covered porch or an exposed wall, our printed 3mm aluminum composite signs are the right product and they live on the metal sign pages.

What size should I order?

Measure whatever it will hang above and aim for roughly two thirds of that width in artwork. Over a sofa or a mantel that usually lands at 30x20 or 36x24 inches. For a hallway, a study or a bedside wall, 18x12 or 24x16 inches is plenty. Cut the size out of painters tape and stick it on the wall for a day before you order.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes.
